Job pricing and labor-rate calculator

Most handyman owners price by feel or by what the cheapest guy charges. Handy's prices every job from three numbers: the loaded cost of an hour of labor, a set material markup, and a target gross profit. Put yours in and see the rate that actually pays you.

1. Your labor rate

Burden = employer payroll taxes, workers comp and benefits. 15% to 25% is common; ask your payroll provider.

Handy's rules of thumb, from Tim's own price book: target 50% gross profit on every estimate, 50% markup on standard materials, a 2-hour minimum per visit, and 1.5x labor for same-day emergencies. Your market and costs will differ.

In Tim's words

"Our average ticket is right around $1,900, whereas most are under a thousand. And the reason, they're selling time and materials over the phone. We are going to actually show up and try and identify other things, present multiple options."Tim Leary, Handy's, on a recorded call, Oct 2026. Tim's own figure, not a typical result.
